There are many important pieces that make up a successful college experience. A few of the major ones include making lifelong friends, learning about yourself and growing as a person, choosing a major that you are passionate about, and having a lot of fun.

Another huge part of being a college student, though, is making a conscious effort to fill up your extra time, most likely occurring during breaks from school, with internships.

It’s important to recognize that the job market for post-college students is a very competitive one. After graduation, upon searching for jobs, you will constantly be in the process of being compared to other students with similar credentials to you by potential employers.

For this reason, it is always helpful to have at least one, but preferably more than one, internship experience on your resume. You want to be seen by employers as someone who made an effort to go above and beyond in the professional world, attempting to find positions that encompass your own interests.

College life can be stressful enough just trying to juggle classes, extra-curricular activities, and a social life, but making time to research and apply for internships is essential, and you won’t be disappointed that you did.

After all, you don’t want to be that person working a pointless job over the summer when you could be working at an internship every day that not only pays, but also makes for a great resume builder.

When beginning to think about the whole application process, you’ll want to consider first what you see yourself doing in an internship: what kind do you think you want to participate in?

With these questions, you should be thinking about if you want to select a program based on what you’re majoring in, or other interests you might have. If you’re lucky, certain internships may cover both of these grounds.

If you’re an advertising or public relations major, you may want to do research on the different offices and PR firms that recruit undergraduate interns.

If you’re a business major, doing research on certain offices that have offered internships to students of your major from your specific university may be helpful in your internship selection process.

Maybe your major is journalism, in which case looking up different local newspapers, magazines and other news outlets and seeing what they have to offer an undergraduate student would be advisable.

For all of these different types of potential internship positions you could have, research is crucial, because you really have no idea about the extent of what is out there.

You might end up learning something you didn’t know about a company, and you might even come to realizations about what you really see yourself doing in the future by reading about multiple different positions.

As for getting in touch with these potential employers, it’s up to you to reach out to them, not the other way around. Be persistent, eager, and memorable.

It’s also important to take into consideration the purpose of selecting an internship. Are you researching and applying for positions based on what is expected of you, or are you seeking out possible internships that are genuinely of interest to you?

Are you only searching for something that will serve as a resume builder and nothing else, or something that will teach you a lot about the field you think you want to pursue?

Another thing to think about is the location in which you’ll be interning. You’ll have to consider if you’re in a position to be thinking about pursuing an internship in cities other than where you live, or if you’ll need to stay close to home.

When thinking about location, it might be important to ask yourself where you could see yourself working if you ever got a job offer in another city; maybe you’ll get hired as an intern at a specific company in another city, and that company may want to extend a job offer after you graduate–you never know.

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to experience a different city, whether it is a larger, more cosmopolitan city, or a city to which you’ve never been. If your circumstances allow for this kind of opportunity, it’s definitely worthy to think about positions in different cities, and apply to them.

A last piece of advice to remember is that you really have nothing to lose, so apply to a lot of different places! The more positions you apply for, the more chances you have at being accepted to at least one of them.

You also should never take rejection personally. Everyone gets rejected for whatever reason; it’s a part of life. Stay focused and passionate, and the right internship will come along!
